DESTINATION WHITBY
The North Yorkshire Moors Railway, built by George Stephenson, the ‘father of railways’ the Whitby and Pickering Railway first openend 1836.
Nearly 130 years later in 1965, British Railways closed most of the route. And that could so easily have been that, but for the vision and persistence of a group of local people.
2007 will see the 40th anniversary of the founding of the preservation society that was to lead to The North Yorkshire Moors Railway being reopened.
Over the last third of a century the railway has developed to become one of Britains best loved tourist attractions – carrying more passengers than any other heritage railway.
But now they have a chance to realise a dream that there founding Fathers could not have envisaged possible – to re-create George Stephenson’s railway by linking the towns of Whitby and Pickering once again with a regular service of Steam Hauled Trains.
